Company Description

The West Nipissing General Hospital was built in 1977 and boasts a clean, modern facility, with over 100 beds in operation at any given time. The Hospital operates a 24/7 Emergency Department serviced by General Practitioners, visiting Surgeons, Anesthetists, and Internists.

The West Nipissing General Hospital hosts regular cardiology, urology, nephrology, otolaryngology, endoscopy, surgical lumps & bumps and psychiatry clinics and consultation visits by specialists. There exists an excellent referral relationship between West Nipissing General Hospital and the Regional Health Centre in North Bay and Health Sciences North in Sudbury. The West Nipissing General Hospital is the sponsoring agency for a community Mental Health and Addictions Program. The program is located on-site with 2 visiting bilingual psychiatrists. Chapel services, volunteers, and a tuck shop assist in providing quality care and meeting the needs of the community.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities

Under the supervision of a registered physician, the Physician Assistant will actively participate in the practice of medicine in the Hospital Emergency Department in accordance with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario’s policy on delegation.

Status: Temporary, Part-Time

Department: Emergency Department

Language: Bilingualism (French & English) is an asset  

  • Work with supervising physician in the care of patients within the physician-patient relationship
  • Work in conjunction with the health care team to assess, plan, provide and integrate care of individual patients
  • Collect and interpret information in order to present a clinical treatment plan for approval by the supervising physician
  • Obtain health history as appropriate, including patient demographics, chief complaint, history of present illness, past medical, surgical, family and psychosocial history, medications, allergies and systems reviews
  • Formulate a treatment and management plan based on assessment and investigation results
  • Follow up on critical bloodwork and diagnostic imaging results
  • Accurately convey relevant information and explanation to the supervising physician, patients, families and other health care professionals
  • Maintain clear, accurate and appropriate records of the patient encounter and management plan
  • Participate in activities that contribute to the effectiveness of the Hospital and established systems
  • Effectively prioritize and execute tasks in collaboration with colleagues
  • Promote the health of individual patients, communities and populations
  • Identify opportunities for advocacy, health promotion and disease prevention
  • Demonstrate a commitment to delivering the highest quality care
  • Recognize and respond to ethical issues encountered in practice including issues of patient consent
  • Recognize the principle and limits of patient confidentiality as defined by practice


Education, Experience & Professional Registration:
  • Graduate of Accredited Physician Assistant education program
  • National Physician Assistant Certification
  • Current membership Canadian Association of Physician Assistants
  • Acute care experience an asset
  • Strong conceptual, analytical, problem-solving and organizational skills
  • Up to Date Immunization is required including COVID-19 Vaccinations
  • Bilingualism an asset (French and English)
